Orthodontists want integration of services into sector’s insurance, primary care

Orthodontist is a branch of dentistry that deals primarily with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of mal-positioned teeth and the jaws. As part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery in the country and mark the 2017 World Orthodontic Day (WOD), the NigerianAssociation of Orthodontist (NAO) has called for the integration of the specialty into the Primary Health Care (PHC) and National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for easy accessibility. Orthodontist is a branch of dentistry that deals primarily with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of mal-positioned teeth and the jaws. President, NAO, Dr. Babatunde Ogunbayo, said the orthodontics addresses the issue of aesthetics, functions and speech. “We tend to pay more attention to aesthetics. Once you have crowding of the tooth, it leads to calculus and hole in the tooth and other periodontal issues which not addressed can lead to tooth loss.”

He added:“It dictates the cognisance of the whole personality. There is no age bracket, once you have teeth and jaw you can visit the orthodontist. The country is underserved and everybody wants to be in the urban area and that is the worry.” Ogunbayo continued: “It is a pity people travel to countries like Egypt, Sudan, Dubai, United Kingdom and United States for orthodontic care, it is part of our job to make the awareness happen. We will be visiting the six geographic zones to render care to the vulnerable as a means of giving back to the community.” The Secretary NAO, Dr. ToluwalaseYemitan, said that the specialty deals with the problem of arrangement of teeth. “What we do,it is all about awareness as orthodontist is part of health; it is not all about appearance.” Yemitan added that in other to make people understand the importance of health, government should initiate integration of orthodontics in primary healthcare which will make it cheaper and also shouldbe incorporated in the NHIS. She continued: “The public insurance should see it as essential not as aesthetics.Problems of bad arrangement of teeth can be nature or genetically modified. Taking out a baby’s early or tooth that failed to grow on time which can lead to distortion.” The secretary decried that orthodontics practice is very poor in Nigeria, with less than 50 specialists in the country. “Most of the challenges we face include lack of access, awareness and cost. Government should create oral health programme because if we have the patient scheme the awareness is already there and people can come around and access care,” she said.

Nigeria’s Foreign Investment Inflow Drops To $908m - Business

Image result for Nigeria’s Foreign Investment Inflow Drops To $908m - Business
The Nigerian weak business confidence continued to impede foreign direct investments in the country following the drop in the foreign investment inflow to its second lowest in 10 years. Total Foreign investment recorded in the first quarter of the year stood at $908.27 million, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This, represents a decline of $640.61 million or 41.36 percent when compared to the $1.55 billion recorded in the last quarter of 2016. The decline in investment inflow was attributed to the fall in “other investment” and portfolio investments, mainly equity, which plunged from $176.44 million in the last quarter of 2016 to $101.99 million in the first quarter of 2017. Also, loans declined from $917.01 million to $369.28 million, and bonds which recorded $25.4 million by the end of the fourth quarter of 2016, did zero in the first quarter of 2017. However, on a quarterly basis, the total value of capital imported in 2017 rose by 27.75 percent when compared with 2016 first quarter but 41.36 percent lower than the final quarter of 2016. The report read in part, “Capital importation was particularly low in January, at $187.9m; this was only the fourth month Continue Reading After This Break...
since 2007 in which capital importation was less than $200m.” “There was a high-profile sale of (bonds denoted in a non-local currency) during the quarter, but this has not yet appeared in the data; there is a lag between subscription and actual payment, and, therefore, it is possible that this will show up next quarter. According to the report, despite the quarterly fall “other investment” remains the largest investment inflow in the first quarter of 2017, representing 42.20 percent of total investment inflow. “The recent surge in investment inflow after the new investors and exporters forex window was launched in April will boost the FDI data in the second quarter,” said Samed Olukoya, a foreign exchange research analyst at Investors king Ltd. “While, positive OPEC consensus on Thursday is expected to bolster economic outlook as it would validate the CBN sustainability of the ongoing forex intervention,” he added.

Bahrain, Egypt block Al-Jazeera websites amid Qatar dispute

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Bahrain and Egypt on Thursday apparently joined Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in blocking access to websites run by the pan-Arab satellite network Al-Jazeera, part of a growing regional dispute with Qatar after an alleged hack of its state-run news agency. The alleged hack - and a purported fake news report that was published during it - have exposed real tensions still lingering in the Gulf between Qatar and other nations over the small gas-rich country's support of Islamist groups. While Qatar quickly denied the comments in the fake report attributed to ruling emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Saudi-owned satellite channels repeatedly aired them throughout the day Wednesday. The incident revived suspicions that exploded into the open three years ago, when several Gulf nations pulled their ambassadors from Qatar over similar worries about its politics. FILE -- In this Nov. 1, 2006 file photo, a Qatari employee of Al Jazeera Arabic language TV news channel walks past the logo of Al Jazeera in Doha, Qatar. Hackers allegedly broke into the website of Qatar's state-run news agency and published a fake story quoting the ruling emir, authorities there said Wednesday, May 24, 2017, as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates responded by blocking Qatari media, including broadcaster Al-Jazeera. (AP Photo/Kamran Jebreili, File) The alleged hack happened early on Wednesday morning and hours later, the website of the Qatar News Agency still was not accessible. The fake article quoted Sheikh Tamim as calling Iran an "Islamic power" and saying Qatar's relations with Israel were "good" during a military ceremony. Online footage of Qatari state television's nightly newscast from Tuesday showed clips of Sheikh Tamim at the ceremony with the anchor not mentioning the comments, though a scrolling ticker at the bottom of the screen had the alleged fake remarks. They included calling Hamas "the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people," as well as saying Qatar had "strong relations" with Iran and the United States. "Iran represents a regional and Islamic power that cannot be ignored and it is unwise to face up against it," the ticker read at one point. The hackers also purportedly took over the news agency's Twitter feed and posted alleged quotes from Qatar's foreign minister accusing Arab nations of fomenting a plot against his country. A series of tweets said Qatar had ordered its ambassadors to withdraw from Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates over the plot. The tweets were later deleted. Sheikh Saif Bin Ahmed Al Thani, the director of the Qatari government's communications office, issued a statement saying authorities had launched an investigation. "The statement published has no basis whatsoever and the competent authorities in the state of Qatar will hold all those (who) committed (this) accountable," Sheikh Saif said. The government later called the state TV footage "fake videos." No group immediately claimed responsibility for the alleged hack. Qatar has been targeted by hackers before, however. In May 2016, hackers leaked sensitive information involving thousands of Qatar National Bank customers, purportedly including government employees and members of the ruling family. In 2012, a damaging virus crippled computer systems at Qatari natural gas producer RasGas soon after a similar attack on Saudi Arabia's state-run oil company. Amid Qatar's denials, Saudi-owned satellite television networks immediately began airing repeated stories about the disputed comments. By early Wednesday morning, internet users in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates could not access websites run by Al-Jazeera, based in the Qatari capital, Doha. On Thursday morning, Bahrain and Egypt also apparently had blocked Al-Jazeera websites, though authorities did not immediately acknowledge it. Egypt also blocked other websites as well, including that of Mada Masr, a popular online news outlet known for its investigative reports on the Egyptian government. Al-Jazeera said Wednesday it was "studying the reports our channels and digital platforms have been blocked in certain countries in the region." It declined to comment further.
Qatar, home to the forward headquarters of the U.S. military's Central Command and some 10,000 American troops, long has faced criticism from its Arab neighbors over its support of Islamists. The chief worry among them is the Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni Islamist political group outlawed by both Saudi Arabia and the UAE as it challenges the nations' hereditary rule. Gulf countries led by Saudi Arabia fell out with Qatar over its backing of then-Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, a Brotherhood member. In March 2014, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain recalled their ambassadors from Qatar over the rift. Eight months later, they returned their ambassadors as Qatar forced some Brotherhood members to leave the country and quieted others. In the time since, Qatar repeatedly and strongly denied it funds extremist groups. However, it remains a key financial patron of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and has been the home of exiled Hamas official Khaled Mashaal since 2012. Western officials also have accused Qatar of allowing or even encouraging funding of Sunni extremists like al-Qaida's branch in Syria, once known as the Nusra Front. As U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Saudi Arabia this week, Qatar issued a statement decrying "an orchestrated barrage of opinion pieces by anti-Qatar organizations" criticizing it. One of those pieces, suggesting Qatar in 2006 may have let go a Qatari man who became an al-Qaida leader in Afghanistan, came from David A. Weinberg, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. "The swift Saudi-Emirati response makes me think they were fishing for a confrontation or this is a convenient pretense ... to address the things already bothering them," Weinberg said. "Qatar likes to write this off as a campaign based on lies and ulterior motives, but if Qatar didn't has the sort of problematic record it has, it wouldn't be the target for this."
